Glow plug timer fault

Post by Bongoozler » Sat Jan 05, 2008 2:19 pm

Hi, Just to let you know.

My bongo would'nt start yesterday, its been dificult for a while.

It turns out that all four glowplugs were shot, they were only changed less than a year ago. The reason for this was that the timer had failed and the plugs were on all the time.

The timer light was going out as usual.

Plugs and timer changed and all OK but maybe its worth checking the timer when you replace plugs just in case.

Regards
Tim

I think you will find the glow plugs do not in fact have a "timer" in their circuit. The light you see on the dash has but this has no effect on the time the plugs are on. When the dash light goes out the plugs remain glowing untill you rev to about 2,500 or the engine temp gets to the required level.
I have put a switch in the plug circuit and it has a light in the switch. The plugs cycle on/off many times before they finally switch off.
Because of this uncommon feature "cheap glow plugs will not last very long. Either put a switch in the circuit (bongo fury fact sheet,or make sure you fit quality plugs.
Did your garage know this Bongo trait ?? What was the "timer" they fitted.
Do they know their Bongo's?
I would suspect all is now well co's you have new plugs. If they are not Quality ones the same problem may arise in another year.

You are probably right haydon callow.

Thanks, I will check on Monday when I see my machanic.

I don't know about the new plugs but I suspect they are Blueprint ones. The previous set I bough through Bongofury.
