Scavenger Fan - Glow Plug Light - Revs - Intermittent - help
Hi just got my newly imported Bongo MOTed - she passed!!! Just a few wee things to look at soon - brake pads & back tyres.
One problem I do have though is when I fire her up the scavenger fan switches on/off intermittently, coinciding with the glow plug warning lamp switching on and off and the revs struggling up/down. I've read a few suggestions on the forum, e.g. check temp sensor under console, relay connections etc.
Before I do all that, I've just had a thought, is it possible that since she hasn't been driven properly for months (I brought her home by trailer and have only driven 1/2 a mile to the test station), that she just needs a good run to boost the battery?? Could a low voltage on the battery affect threshold voltage for temp sensor to kick in??
Any thoughts would be appreciated. (PS I can't take for a good run yet as we're not registered yet- no plates.)
Thanks

Sounds like a staightfoward teething trouble kind of thing. The right tip will turn up for sure.

Hi Sly, Are you sure its the scavenger fan that keeps popping on intermittently on a cold start up? Is the aircon switched on? This switches the radiator fans on&off...
The glowplug light should only illuminate just the once,if it keeps on flashing, it indicates a problem with the glowplugs, or the glowplug relay...
I'd replace the plugs anyway,as a matter of course....
Good luck, and keep us posted...

Hi just thought i would throw my 2 pence worth in ...had the same fault !
relay chatter ...rev counter bouncing .... heater light blipping on .... dropping down gerbox ! when on motorway!!! .... all in any combination, started after 2 weeks of having new cyl head fitted. checked wiring manual and traced problem to EARTH BRACKET ON SIDE OF ENGINE its just to the back of the fuel pump and up a little, its a plate with around 4/5 earthing points, it was flapping about (garage had not "nipped" it up right)
hope this helps... regards Rich

Hi, a quick update with this one. I did some servicing today (filters and cam belt) and took Bongo out for its first real drive (just got the number plates yesterday!) After driving for 30mins or so I'm getting the relay chatter, dropping down a gear, coinciding with glow plug light coming on. I had hoped that a decent run to charge the battery may have sorted it, but not so. I'm going to check the earthing point as suggested by Rich - it definitely seems to be an electrical problem and probably earthing(?)
How good is this forum!!!!
Mega thanks to Rich - I lifted the driver's seat and saw straight away that the offending earthing point was loose - in fact one bolt was missing. After a quick look under the engine I found the missing bolt. Then I tightened the two bolts up (adding a bit of thread lock) and Bob's your uncle the problem was fixed!! Easy when you know how and have such brilliant contributors to the forum.
Fantastic
