I think vanmaneri.....er, sorry, socket set sue may be having a dig at my over simplified terminology???

I was just trying to keep it in laymans terms for a genuine query from a non mechanically minded person.

The belts drying out is indicative of a worn perished rubber belt in need of replacement,or failiure may be imminent.

The wd40 trick temporarily moistens the belt to a degree that the chirping sound dissapears, as the belt dries and returns to its perished brittle state,so will the chirping return.

If the chirping noise continues,it could suggest a fault with the alternator,or perhaps re-torquing of the pulleys,or pulley bearings may need attention.

The wd40 spraying on the belts iliminates the possibility of it being a more serious inherent fault.

Many thanks for your help it seemed to work a treat :D :D .As for the laymans terms it was very helpfull FOR ME, as i really do try to have a go if i know what to look for,but it gets my goat with this flaming site when you ask for help,you get some people giving such UNHELPFULL remarks :!: :!: :x :x :x :x :x :x if you cant help then keep your remarks to yourself :!:Big daddy cain i will pm you in future ok.

Dear Susan

My local shop sold me Millers Oils, Diesel Power Plus, and it now starts first time, no problems whatsoever, runs great.
Pop it in the fuel tank on filling up, I have had other additives, but non have performed as good as this.

Sorry I could not reply earlier but I had a long haul job on today.

If I was told to spray WD40 onto my fan belts I would think it was a joke. BD is correct to a point with his synopsis but not with the method of determining the fault. Now if BD had have said spray water on the fan belts I would have agreed, if the sound had stopped - usually very quickly, say 30 seconds the sound will re-apear then it could be the belts drying out is indicative of a worn perished rubber belt in need of replacement,or failure may be imminent.

Unfortunately a squeaky belt can not only mean a worn out belt it can also mean that the alignment of the pulleys may have changed slightly, due to wear and tear or even a nut or a pulley coming loose so it really needs a good visual check to determine the reason for the squeak. (Best done with the engine OFF)

Remember we are not only talking about just the two belts driving the alternator and water pump but the other belts concerned with driving the vacuum pump for the brakes and power steering.

I suppose there is even a chance the squeak could eminate from the timing belt.

So as you can see my thoughts are 'why contaminate the drive belts with a spray lubricant when we are told to keep all drive belts free of oils and contaminants, yes it will cure the squeak but it will not cure the problem if it hides the squeak for a period of time. Water will do exactly the same but safer and will dry out very quickly without contaminating the belts.'

I hope you find these remarks helpful and it helps you rectify your squeaky belts.

There is a fact sheet for changing the belts, you may need it. :)

Nor me, just turned on as the veg were simmering away nicely, the beef was 'resting', and the Yorkshire Puds were just ready to go in, must go dinners ready to be served.

So whats it to be, WD40 or good old fashioned water???? :D

Hi "socket set sue", As i have seen trained mechanics using wd40 on squeaky belts, i assumed it was an accepted practice?

I deliberately ommited the possibility of the misaligned pulleys scenario,in the hope that you would repeat the same diagnosis as you had previously posted when you went under the name of vanmanerik.
