Front fog light lens

Post by Lovejoy » Sat Dec 22, 2007 9:53 am

A stick in the road flew up and smashed the lens on one of my front fogs. The lamp still works and nothing else was damaged thankfully.

Does anyone know if I can get a replacement lens, or do I have to buy a whole new fog light unit.

This is the best picture I have of the fog light (before it was smashed) and believe it is a Mazda original. At least it was on the vehicle when we got it:

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Have used the search option and only found talk of wiring, changing bulbs and installing whole new units.

Both of mine are cracked, one holed. :(
I have used clear fablon for now, but you can get clear lens repair tape form auto stores, Thats if the lens is not too badly damaged.

Thanks all.

The lens is lying shattered somewhere on the A30 near Launceston, so no chance of a repair.

I can't believe I have to replace the whole unit.

Oh well, it's down to the motor factors on Monday to see what they've got, and hope it's not a big job to swap out the Mazda one for a non Mazda one.

Anyone know a make which are a straight forward swap for the Mazda ones ?

I dropped lucky with the ring versions i had (dbo has them now)...I paid £2 for an unopened blister pack kit with faded packaging...

The lenses on the fogs i have at the moment are the "all weather" type with an irridescent lens that changes colour depending which angle the light is coming from, from yellow to purple,or a mixture of the two together. $17 for a full kit!

Lucky you bigdaddy. I take it that you are going on holiday in America again soon. Buying from America over the internet seems to be a bit of a problem to me. Not only is the postage very high but when I tried to buy a spam blocker via a download they had the audacity to convert the price at one dollar to the pound. Highway Robbery.

Well with the price of genuine Mazda ones, it might be cheaper to pay for you to go over and fetch me some.

<groan> I bet this is going to be one of those long trawls around the motor factors being met with blank faces and sharp drawing in of breath through clenched teeth at every stop when I show them my Bongo fog light sans lens.

I've not even got any blanking plates. But maybe it might be easier to take them both out and replace with blanks, as I have never used front fog lights, so don't actually need them, but don't want to drive round in a vehicle with clingfilm over one of them.

Actually I did need fog lights once, while driving on the North Yorkshire moors back when I was in college in Middlesbrough. Can't remember what the place is called but it is the highest pub on the moor and was used in the double glazing commercials.

Anyway, I had a Hillman avenger in those days, with no fog lights, and when we came out of the pub it was a real pea souper.
I remember driving along at about 5mph with my passenger watching out the windscreen, and me driving with the door open, looking down following the white line on the centre of the road. That was about the extent of the visibility.

So the one time in 25 years of driving I could really have done with some low down lighting and I didn't have it.

I dunno... the sacrifices i make to keep you bongoers happy

Ok lovejoy, if you send me a couple of tickets to florida,i suppose i could bring you a Few sets back.....

R.e blanking plates... The original blanking plate is actually part of the bumper, its attached by four thin extensions of the actual bumper, they look easy to remove (the blanks) but not so easy to retro fit...

Perhaps a fine (ish) mesh could be bonded to bumper from the inside,a sort of transparent blank?

It would take the "blank" effect off the eye at least...?

That's not a bad idea. Kind of like the mesh grill on an XKR Jag.

Gotta be better than two empty holes.

I'll try to find a replacement fog lamp first, if not then mesh it might have to be.

I think that the front fogs are not worth fretting over if they are not fitted to the van already .There are a few situations where front driving lamps might be useful but fogs? For the majority of us they are simply not needed. Granted, the gaps in the bumper if the fogs or the blanking plates have been removed do not look good and so I can send you two ( free! ) sheets of nice alloy mesh which, when attached behind the holes using the existing screw mounting holes /self tappers look just fine . This is a 20 minute job for both sides

Memo to myself...

Must move to Scotland where there is no fog 8)

I must have used my foglamps on my car because of fog/ low cloud twenty times in the last month. Our Bongo doesn't have them, sadly.

(and being a new shape has pointy end blanks, and there are no brackets behind, so haven't sorted how to fit any - Mazda originals at about £300 are out of the question)
