Spoiler

Post by Ralph » Wed Dec 19, 2007 1:48 pm

Does the spoiler have any noticeable effect on anything?
like the back of the van getting covered by muck? ours
without a spoiler is always covered in crap no matter how
much we clean it.

Marry Christmas and a happy new year to all.

It doesn't seem too (I have one). I seriously wondered about making side sections for the spoiler in case the muck resulted from air sweeping in from the sides of the vehicle. Haven't got around to experimenting yet (probably never will). After initially finding it annoying, I've stopped noticing it. I think its because the Bongo has such good wing mirrors and - lets face it - the only thing of mention to be seen in the rear view mirror is the silly b*gger who is tailgating you. So much more fun to let them get worked up because you are paying them no attention, than to get worked up yourself because you know they are there. On the (rare) occasions I do notice they are there, I've been known to put my right foot down momentarily and gift them a cloud of black diesel smoke. They reappear in the wing mirrors then as they drop back in disgust. Very satisfying 8)

Mike

PS - I also have a towbar and steel steps for them to say hello to should their impatience all get too much for them. Hey - I'm a thoughtful kinda guy 8)

Yep we have a tow bar but the smoke thing does not work
don't know why but our Bongo does not seem to smoke
even with the foot buried in the carpets, much cleaner than
all the other diesels we have had, the mot emissions test
was very low and yet it goes well.
Seems the spoiler does not do a lot but they look ok.
many thanks

Well, at a weekender in the Autumn muck of Perthshire I thought the rear screen of Yeo1's van looked cleaner than mine after a couple of hundred miles. He has a spoiler fitted. :?

Hmmm - I just went by what others on BF said, not having had an opportunity to do comparative testing. I guess its the difference between mucky and filthy then. I feel much cheered (and very superior) for having a spoiler 8)

swiftly back on topic

i hadbt even thought about the spoiler stopping muck and crap sticking to it, but if its dropping down from above then yes it would stop the back door from getting as dirty

Even better results when running on veg oil,  and i've been known to shout ... "SMELL MY CHIPS!!"

Back on topic-ish....

I've got a spoiler and me arse is constantly dirty.

A lot of grit on the roads just now, as temperatures are hovering around zero. Went through the village of Lairg at 2pm, and the trees where still white with frost. Very festive looking :D (photo taken with an old Nokia 6600)

This phenomenon isn't just peculiar to Bongos. It's down to the air flow created at the rear by a fast travelling vehicle with the aerodynamics of a house brick. This is my third MPV and they were all as bad. Maybe what you need is one of these:

Oh and Alan - I bet you are one of those smug bassads with an auto-closing side door and rear aircon?

My theory is t etop spoiler is trying to give some improvement (and Dandys observation about his and his mates tends to bear this out), but its effect is limited as air is pulled round on to the rear windscreen from the turbulence where the slab sides end. Just possibly, some kind of sidewall might reduce that problem. But do we care that much? Obscured F-off rear windscreen, black smoke on tap - perfect combination for p*ssing off tailgaters
