found THIS tonight - kinda backs up what I'm saying about the different propshaft speeds............... :)

This makes complete sense, now, as in summer here the roads are rather dusty at the edges, and when I go to the village shops and pull away SLOWLY round a particular corner, the inside rear wheel always skids suddenly as with a rear wheel drive car......now I thought that as the Bongo is permanent 4x4 , this should also happen on the front.....NOW I understand

Your posts clarify the logic that I was struggling with! I tend to agree that it makes sense to run same size tyres to equalize the prop shaft speeds, for the use that the Bongo tends to be put to. I went for 4wd to give improved traction on mud & snow, not for overall performance on the road, so I don't imagine that the time-delay in the additional traction kicking in is going to be as critical.

Here goes I have read all the comments....

and have decided to revert back to what was on the car originally when we bought it 195/65/15 front and rear....

I am booking in this morning to have them fitted so will update you all this afternoon as to whether my theory worked or not....

Bearing in mind that I had no whining whatsoever when all tyres were the same!!!!

Flippin eck dandy...a quattro diff is one thing i wouldn't like to re-build!

Essentially, the system acts as a temporary "diff lock" when traction is compromised,yet interestingly,only when the wheels are turned...

As opposed to a conventional diff lock which can only be employed in a wheels straight scenario.

Clever little boffins at audi... :wink:

I seem to recall the lsd's in my previous RS turbos working in a similar manner?

Well in my opinion (FWIW) that is the wrong way to go.
195/70-15 is the correct size for the front and 215/65-15 for the rear and the rear load index must be at least 96 - you may find the 195/65 is less than that. That size will also under gear by about 3% making your speedo over read and not helping your MPG much either.

If you are going to go for the same size all round I would go for 215/65 to get the correct size and load index for the rear axle.

Mine had 195/70-15 all round when I got it and it handled like a pig - I now have 215/65 -16 all round and it is much much better.

BUT it is a 2wd and I don't have the wind-up whine worries.

I sincerely hope that no damage has been done in the meantime hils... It may be worth considering changing the tyres to the same size all round?

At least that way,there is no possibility of a mis match of turning ratios,plus, you can have the same sized tyre on a spacesaver replacement,that could be used on ANY corner of your bongo :wink:

I've had the same size tyres all round on my bongo since i bought her in 2003,(4wd)no probs,apart from suspicions that my cv joints may need attention quite soon....

I originally had 195/70/15's all round, then 245/45/18's, i'm now running 225/45/18's.

FWIW - my Bongo was bought from Manchester Campers and serviced by Adrian in Bury. It came with brand new tyres fitted and these are 215/65 R15 all round. I've had no problems at all and they've still got loads of tread on them after 18 months or so.

I hope you get it sorted - good luck!

Edit - mine's a 4WD by the way.

I'd go with scanner and BDC on this one - the wider tyres seem ok on a 4WD I drove and didn't make the steering much heavier.

BDC - I've always liked the Torsen logic - so simple when you see it but what kind of mind designed that and auto gearboxes :?

The new tyres 195/65/15 (which incidently where the ones on originally)
have worked no whinning handling much better...
When they are next due for renewal I will probably buy 205 or 215s
but cant afford to replace 4 more tyres especially during this expensive month

I am so happy.....
