I use a modified Thule bar set with a topbox but always give the roof a hand up from inside - also give it a hand down too - the extra weight does strain the mechanism

Bongorack
OK folks.....this is the sales spiel...........Bongorack is made out of GRP...(plastic )....all the fittings are of stainless steel..it will never rot.....it is actually very strong and low profile with minimum wind resistance so it could be left on the bongo and not really affect the mpg...it is ideal for carrying those bulky lightweight item which take up a lot of room in your Bongo.....eg..awnings..fishing rods...screaming kids....etc.......you will find it for sale soon in the Bongo shop...and also on e-bay at Bongopromos....there have been some great suggestions about improving the design which I appreciate......I just hope that this auction will raise a good amount for Gillians kids fund....because as you know if you have been to the meets she really is a superstar with the kids......end of rant....happy bidding........Alan
ps....it weighs less than 6kg

No probs Alan. yes, structural integrity is a thing to watch out for esp. as I now know it is GRP not aluminium. It might be worth seeing if roof box mounting point distances are standardised. If so you could have alternative crossbar bolt through points for those standard distances. Also, probably only need one of the bars to be moveable although it would be ideal to have both front and rear ones adjustable.alant54 wrote:Mike ......what a great idea....I will explore that possibility without compromising the strength of the rack.mikeonb4c wrote:Provided you had the tooling to do it, it looks as though the design chould be modified so the cross bars were bolted through slots in the longitudinal runners. Loosening the bolts would allow bars to be slid for and aft a certain amount to fit topboxes, and then tightning the crossbar bolts would fix the bars in position. Just a thought
Great idea though. Crying out to be done so full marks for doing it!
Mike I have been in conference with the grp boffins today and the slot is a no no......it would compromise the stength of the rack.....but drilling two extra 11mm holes and relocating one of the crossmembers would be ok...........Alanmikeonb4c wrote:No probs Alan. yes, structural integrity is a thing to watch out for esp. as I now know it is GRP not aluminium. Re: tintop roofrack
According to my measurements the clearance needed above the gutterline is at least 150mm to clear the fluted profile of the roof. It could then be fitted behind the sunroof (if fitted) which would allow very easy access for loading and unloading.alant54 wrote:Scanner.....I have my desgn team working on that possibility at the very moment...scanner wrote:Any chance of modding one to fit the gutters on a tintop?.......but I could do with a tintop to get the dimensions to see if it is feasible.....nothing is impossible in Bongland......Alan
What I really need though are some nice custom roof bars to fit my top box on.
roof bars for tintop
Scanner....after I have visited the Bongomaster and weighed up the measurements I will put my entire design team ( ME
) on the case and I am sure that I will come up with something suitable.........watch this space.....Alan
ps..does anyone know if the gutters on the tintop are the same as an AFT Bongo.....?
