Hold Light???

Sorry to be so thick, but can someone explain the Hold Light ie what is it there for?

I was driving along quite happily when it came on and then I was locked in a particular gear from which there was no escape! I was having the split CV gaiter sorted at a local garage (see separate thread on Lakeside Garage, Staines)...but they recommended getting it looked at by an Auto Box specialist.

Anyway, driving back from Lakeside the Hold Light stayed on for about 10 minutes on the motorway and then disappeared, giving me the full spectrum of gears once again.

Since then, the Bongo has been absolutely fine....

Then today, I noticed the button on the gear lever which when pressed activates the Hold Light...felt so stupid cos I must've knocked this inadvertently the other day, hence the problems I was having.

So here's the question - what is that button for? In what circumstances would you use it?

It takes you down a gear and (I think) locks you in that gear.

It's for slippy conditions etc.

Someone else on here says that if you select it from rest it forces the Bongo to set off in 2nd - for snowy conditions etc.

That might have been me!

In D the van has the full range of gears, with the Hold button pressed it will use only 2 and 3 (as you say, good in snowy conditions)

In S the van will use only 1, 2 and 3 - pressing Hold forces it to use only 1 and 2

In L the van will use only 1 and 2 - pressing Hold forces it to stay in 1

Good for forcing a lower gear on steep descents

You can find an Explanation on how S and L on automatics work on Page 18 of the Mazda Bongo Friendee Owners Handbook.

It refers only to going up and down hills. Says that using them avoids accidently activating the kickdown function when accelerating to maintain speed when going up hill. Then when going down hill they give stronger engine braking when driving in D may produce too much speed.
