steering wheel thingy

Post by bongo rbk » Mon Dec 03, 2007 7:18 pm

Hi all,

I've just got my new steering wheel (non airbag) and boss, been out to the van removed airbag and steering wheel, no probs.

Fitting new boss and wheel and found that the "clock spring" was fouling the fit. It has a large lug type conector on it for the wiring for airbag and horn. So removed that to.

Fitted steering wheel but no way of conecting horn so i have no horn now  . Also my airbag light is flashing on dash now.....

So in short 2 questions,

1, Is there a clock spring that will fit and get power to my horn?

2, What can i do about the airbag light? (take bulb out or reset?)

Thanks Nic

Sorry, no idea about the light, but please be wary of the insurance implications of removing the airbag wheel, i.e. it will be invalidated unless pre agreed.
I investigated this with my MX5 and was pretty much told don't or else we'll find a way to avoid paying you in an accident....so I have stuck with the old, manky wheel coz I can't justify the 400 squid to fit a swanky new airbag wheel.

!. Can't help with this one,but daveblueozzie and some others have overcome this problem,i'm sure they'll offersome assistance when they pick up on this thread....

2. I still have the original non airbag steering wheel on my bongo.

But i have replaced an airbag wheel in the past( ford focus ), to overcome the problem with the light (your battery is still disconnected from removing the wheel i take it?) if there are two wires coming from the airbag,i ran these to a fuse connection, and inserted a 5 amp fuse in the holder, then taped it up out of the way in the wheel recess.

This fooled the circuit into thinking that the airbag was still fitted,so the passenger airbag was still operable, and so were the seat belt pre-tensioners. (same circuit)

A word of warning with your old airbag! If you are gonna bin it,then please dont! The airbag is considered an explosive device,if it explodes as the bin lorry compacts, you will be held responsile for any damge or injuries induced.

Phone your local recycling cente for advice.

If keeping the airbag (in case you want to re-install at some stage) It must be stored correctly.

It must be kept in a cool place, bear in mind that if little prying fingers come into contact with it,the results could be fatal!

I can't understate how dangerous these devices can be if handled badly, dropped etc...

Garages who stock airbags have to have a firearms licence AND a specially constructed storage area for airbags

Being a radio installer, I get the chance to regularly remove trim and seats. Seat belt tensioners, curtain airbags and dashboard airbags are always withing mm's of where we have to drill, run cables, etc. We have to be very careful and in the 10 years I have done this job, only once has anything ever gone off on me.
A Vauxhall Carlton was in for a stripout and a cable was trapped under the seat. The senior Technician said, "just loosen the seat bolt and lift the runner". I did and BANG !!!! ... I shat me self as the seat belt tensioner went off. It's not nice when the dust clears and all you can see sticking out of the seat belt anchor is a little yellow flag.....Good job it was going for disposal, the cops weren't bothered, but the missus was when she came to the washing....

no real hassle
only thing i did was relocate the horn earth as i did`nt use the spacer and the spacer on this seems to earth the horn button

have found out though you do lose the self cancelling function of the indicators
which is a bit of a sod but we will see how it goes

well no you don`t you make sure you line the boss up with the indicator actuator on the steering shaft

Hi clogger did you hav an airbag on your original steering wheel?

I've managed to rig up my horn today to work on the centre push.
My auto cancel is still working..

The boss i have has 2 holes in the bottom which the lugs of the auto cancel ring fit into.
