I am soon to install a split charging system to my boat, to replace the existing system which uses independent batteries for each engine. This will make an interesting installation, as it involves one engine starting battery, two leisure batteries, and two engines! I will be using a 100 amp relay from Raw Components (ebay seller). He has a kit available, item 280174587719, which may be of use to someone.

The snag with my existing setup is that should one engine fail, only one battery gets charged, so I have devised a split charging system using diodes so that starting either engine will energise the split-charge relay, and so charge all batteries from either or both engines.

Hi
Thanks for all the replies. The outcome:-
I'll go ahead, contact Martin, and fit a second relay system, and as Tim suggests, I'll switch them on/ off using neutral wire with switch in. I'll probably leave the rear unit permanently switched off with a switch in the rear trim panel, and the front one for the L/Batt on the dash.
My reason for getting the second one is that I'll have 2 options : Leisure battery for camping, and, if I take the caravan, and as it seems to work well off the fag lighter, I'll leave the existing unit in place for the caravan system. If I take a trailer camping, instead of the caravan, I'll also be able to charge a second L/B.
Thanks again
Helen
