Burning rubber smell on cold start up??

Post by Hindmost Attitude » Fri Nov 23, 2007 3:02 pm

Any thoughts on my new challenge to keep the Beast from poisioning it occupants.

An awful rubber buring smell rushes into cabin on cold start up, fades to nothing when moving and reappears when stationary? Had major top end work last week following cracked head gasket and smell has appeared ever since. Thought it was just paint burninng off new head components but happens on cold start up.

Cam belt was replaced in build up, could it have slipped from running true and now be rubbing? Only other option might be heater fan?

Any ideas please?

Can't see how it could be cambelt.
Are you getting any noises like aircon/fan belts slipping?
Does the heater motor work properly on all speeds?

If it happened since the work was done then whoever did the work should sort it. They must have made a mistake or forgotten something. It may be as simple as a poor seal on the seat base.

Hav eliminated cam belt which i think would have manifested itself more seriously by now if it had been rubbing. Heater fan works fine without smell. I think its the alternator or air con belt. Air con one looks polished underneath and although there is no squeel i think it might be slipping.

As ever thanks for the input.
