Lets not rush into a new engine - I find it hard to believe the Bernie has is beyond repair. The garage wouldn't have bought a new head if the block was knackered so it must be fixable.

I don't know what "lack of pressurisation" means. If it is low compression then it might be a number of things:

Wrong valve timing
Poor valve seating (did they test the valves - was it a bare head?)
Head gasket failure (old bolts?)
Warped head
Warped block (very unlikely)
Worn bores (very unlikely)

If it still has cooling problems then did they fix what caused the head to go last time. It will have a worn water pump and or blocked radiator.

If it just wont fire then it could be a wiring fault or a poorly timed fuel pump.

Thanks for the responses all.
Not being a mechanic, or very mechanically minded, I've had to rely on the garage's verdict on this. Three different mechanics have now dealt with this and all three have responded the same. I really just want to get my beloved Bongo back asap-I've been without it so long now ;-( -so have bitten the bullet and purchased a reasonably price replacement engine, which will hopefully be fitted this week.
Fingers crossed.

Cheers

On the plus side, since you've bought a new engine, you ought to be able to flog parts off the old one to recoup a bit of the outlay. Do you get to keep the new head(s) as they could be flogged

Alternatively, it would be interesting to see if the engine could be got working and then sold. As SM says, it can't be that impossible to fix. 8)

Hiya

We seem to be going through the same thing at the moment.

Being new to Bongoland (August ish!) we wandered around the Scottish Highlands (Hiya Brora Bongo!) for 2 weeks without any problems - it was a dream. About 2 weeks after we came back I noticed what seemed to be a coolant loss, and that it was overheating. That seemed to be sorted and the Bongo was ok for a couple of weeks, then it started making strange noises and overheating again. I took it to our local mechanic who fitted a new thermostat and flushed the radiator out 3 times - it was ok for another week and a bit and it started doing it again!!

Our poor Bongo is booked back in for next Monday and the mechanic thinks it might be a cracked cylinder head. If it is - where do we get a new cylinder head from? We would rather have a new one as we don't want this to happen again soon! I noticed that I can get the Gasket Set from this website but am sure about the Cylinder Head.

Help please - we need to get our Bongo mobile again!!
