Bongo decides when to change gear....not me!

Post by monkeyboybongo » Sat Nov 17, 2007 8:57 pm

Getting a little bit concerned now. Every once in a while the bongo will show great reluctance to change up a gear. She will start off and the selection to 2nd is normal and smooth but then seems very reluctant to go to 3rd or 4th.

When I press the hold button on the gear lever and the hold button illuminates on the dash she changes gear. As soon as the hold is cancelled she goes straight back to 2nd and revvs her ass off. Normally a stop and a cycle through the selector sorts it but I wondered if this is a sign of anything dubious.

This is an interrmittant thing and only happens every once in a while. It happens whilst cold and warm....seems by its own choice and I haven't been able to narrow anythng down.

Any clues or similar experiences? I'm still under warranty but only just so should I get this looked at?

Probably just needs the gearbox oil changed and the filter cleaned.
Should be done every 25,000 miles

Some people have experienced trouble with a dodgy electrical connection to the speedometer, which drives the gear changing process. Could this apply here?

If its under warranty (just) I think you should register your concern with the vendor NOW (in writing preferably) as they should really be looking at the problem. Even you are happy to have a go at fixing it yourself (be careful though as they may say your tinkering has invalidated the warranty - get their agreement first) you need to be able to refer it back to them under the warranty if you have no joy in mending it.

Good luck - keep us posted as this is an important area and outcomes are useful for all of us in case our number comes up.

PS - I presume this is nothing to do with the Bongos designed characteristic of not changing into higher gears until the autobox has warmed up

On the other hand it might be a really minor problem. This is from the "Hold Light" factsheet in the members-only area of the website:

"The speedo head was taken out and it was seen that a screw which connects the speedo signal to the printed circuit was missing on the circuit... ...."

What colour is the auto fluid monkeyboy? Remember to check the level when the gearbox is warm
