Bongo speaking by itself ?

Post by Bongobus » Sat Nov 10, 2007 10:24 pm

Well must say this is a strange one.

I have a strange sound coming from the front of the bongo nearside which sounds like a faint clown horn. Very intermittent and tonight i noticed more when i turned the engine off it making the noise by itself.
honk.........honk............honk...honk

Its like a car alarm that is struggling on power supply and occassionaly makes a noise - Im sure this will attract passers by.

Thought id press the vehicle horn button on steering wheel to help the situation and appears the two sounds are not linked.

Weird - any ideas ?

Yes coolant - sounds very familiar talk to me, might be red herring but I have recently had a honking horn sound...

bongo speaking

Hi
You've run over a gnome who's got stuck in your macpherson strut, and he's trying to attract your attention with a trumpet......yes it sounds like a cooling prob. as suggested....i've had a car that did the same, and no apparent fault.
Cheers

I had pretty much the same thing although mine sounded like the gnome was stuck somewhere below the passenger seat, using a muted alpine horn to attract my attention.

Turned out to be the last throws of boiling coolant just before the cylinder head cracked.

Suggest urgent action!!

If you want a recent example read my post at:

http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... hp?t=15963

I called it a whine, but it could be a horn. The advice from the forums was coolant. I had the Bongo off the road. Took it to a garage yesterday and yes another Bongo head gasket cracked.

UPDATE

Post by Bongobus » Sun Nov 11, 2007 4:40 pm

thought id post an update i found today.

Thought id check the obvious : oil level / exhaust smoke colour / filler cap for choc milkshake texture.

oil level = ok no discolour just black
smoke = no visable problem with smoke from exhaust.
oil filler cap = no gunk
temp guage = goes up but stays under centre
floor = no water puddles

so checked the coolant level to find empty !!!?? after putting about 3 litres in last night to raise to high.

Immediately put 3 litres in to raise to high again and squeezed hoses to find leaks.

Then raised the passenger seat to have a look and found water drips and staining colour orange under silver stuff under seat.

It appears i have a fountain from a small hose tiny hole which gets worse when the vehicle heats up. This hose terminates to a blank end so i should be able to cut and reuse but is this another problem thats seperate ?
Interested to know what this hose is for if any1 can help - pic provided.

seems no strange noises now which could have been the waterpump with no water maybe? or am i speaking too early.

thats yer bleed hose bruv, cut and refit way to go ....i repositioned mine so it lays on that wire loom above the alt so it doesnt rub , also use garden hose or similar as a sleeve to protect that area above the alt... whether it caused the noise ????

The "honk" noise had been the coolant boiling and the pressure cap valve vibrating!

Make sure you bleed the system after you've repaired the hose or you could be in for an expensive xmas

Thre is a Fact Sheet in the Members Area under Coolant: Replacement Of.

I've not done this but I gather it can be tricky and it is vital to get it right - good luck.
