K&N Filter

Okayy - so I've gone and bought a K&N filter and just fitted it. Reading the blurb it should be good for a good few thousand miles before it needs cleaning. It then goes on to say you need special K&N fluid to wash it in and special K&N oil to re-oil it afterwards. Oh come on this is a scam right? Anyone bought this stuff? Does it say what ingredients are in the cleaner and what's special about the oil or anyone used any alternatives?

you buy it as a filter recharger kit which contain everything..I've used these for years on bikes and they're excellent....think its just an alcohol type cleaner and oil but would you take the chance of using something else and damaging your filter or worse your bongo to save a couple of quid.....

I know what you mean but sometimes these things are a rip off. For example you can pay a small fortune for a little bottle of cleaner for tapeheads etc. It's only isopropyl alcohol. Or alloy wheel cleaner is 20% phosphoric acid. It's sometimes cheaper to go and buy the chemical or find that something readily available is just as good.

You're right I wouldn't take the chance unless someone claims to have found a cheaper alternative that works.

I have no idea if they are any good or not (many people swear by them) - I got one in the end as it works out cheaper in the long run than replacing normal filters.

I think the cleaning kits retail for about £12...

I deliver to some bloke that works for K&N,he gets me a free kit when i need one (about one every two years).

Every car i own has a K&N fitted, as personally speaking, i like em.

After having a car with one fitted,it seems a terrible waste of money to go back to buying filters that you know you will end up binning a few months later...

BDC, I agree with you, I first came across these filters when I had my first Honda Gold Wing,serious touring bike meant to do massive mileage and at least 1.5 hrs to get to the air filter to change it!!.
Four Gold Wings later and I have a 2003 1800, and would you believe i now give myself half a day to change the air filter every 16,000 or at least i did till I remembered K and N.My french neighbour shakes his head in disbelief at the amount of tupperware to remove to get to the filter.
Anyway back to the op, I have recently fitted one to the Bongo, oh so easy and quick to do, first impression, slightly more noise on initial acceleration but it does seem to accelerate marginally quicker, of course only a seat of the pants feeling no technical check or stop watch. BUT it does seem much smoother.Maybe just my imagination (as the song says) but in my mind worth the extra small investment as you clearly also think.

Looks like another fitment
Can't say i've ever thought of them on bikes, and on one of my honda 4's (Yoshi.ised), i did away with all air filters, and all comfort come to that, and without filters it howled like nobody's business at 10000revs
Pity they don't make Bongos sound that good

BDC, I gotta be honest and tell you after reading your original post i thought ,hmmmm!! cant say I have EVER noticed the turbo noise from the Bongo.
Drove lorries all over Europe for years and of course they were very noticeable. Maybe just getting too old and too deaf!! or too many other noises in Bongo.! But by the way she pulls now i am sure its working.
