Wheel bearings

My Freda's developed what I think might be a dodgy rear wheel bearing. It makes a sort of shuz shuz shuz[1] noise, the frequency of which seems to correspond to road speed. If I'm turning right it goes away and if I turn left it gets louder - it definitely sounds as though it's coming from the rear of the vehicle; from this I'm thinking it's probably the off side rear one. The sound is only noticable below about 25 mph when coasting.

I jacked up the rear yesterday but I couldn't feel any play at the wheel - does anyone have any suggestions about how to diagnose the problem properly?

we have just develped the same noise from front near side,only hear it at slow sppeds,we thought the wheel bearing garage said cv joint,
£100.00 +vat

No CV joints at the back.
Dave, have you felts the hubs for heat? - may be sticking brakes.

It does sound very like a wheelbearing. If you have a 2 wheel drive with no LSD you can jack up the affected side and let the engine spin it up. You will certainly hear it if its a bearing. Don't run it for long like that because the diff doesn't like it. If you can be bothered to get all 4 wheels off the ground then you can check a 4WD the same way. Sometimes you just have to change a wheel bearing hoping it the right one.

How big a job is it, and do you need specialist tools? I'm thinking maybe a visit to a Bongo friendly garage might be in order, any idea how long it'd take a mechanic to do the job?
