Water pump location

Post by JulianG » Fri Oct 19, 2007 4:54 pm

Ok so its water leak time again ! I have a leak coming from behind the double pulley in the middle of the block at the front ?? is this the water pump ?? I have been told by a local friendly mechanic that the water pump is located inside the timing belt case and is in fact driven by the timing belt ?? I cant get hold of a workshop manual until late next week so am working blind any assistance would be very welcome.

Ive not long since had one of these fitted,You are in the right place on the engine, as for it being "inside the timing belt case" I dont think so!! it seems to be a bolt on item to Me.
May be wrong Im not a mechanic.Rough guide to a cost 85 quid for the pump and 92 quid to fix and refill and bleed coolant.

Have a search for Water and Pump lots of posts on it!!

OK I have just stripped out the water pump, which is NOT under the timing belt casing, or driven from the timing belt. it is the second pulley from the bottom in the middle of the engine at the front of the block.

From what I gather if the engine overheats and the pump runs dry you are in danger of damaging the rear seal on the main drive shaft that drives the water pump vein. The drive shaft has two seals one at the rear inside the pump the other at the front just behind the pulley. There is a small bleed hole in the drive shaft housing between the two seals which water will leak from in the event of a seal failure.

If people are interested I will take some photos and write up the replacement procedure if you are a reasonable DIY mechanic it’s not difficult.

Not sure where I stand legally if I divulge the name of the garage and fitter who told me that the pump was located behind the timing belt case and driven by the timing belt! They clearly haven’t got a clue which is a little worrying as they were referred to me by Bongo Bits.

Legally you are fine because it is not deflammatory or hear-say. You can't go wrong with a factual statement without opinion. Are you sure you were speaking to a mechanic at the garage - it might just have been a salesman? Still not great for an experienced garage.
