squeal like slipping fan belt, but tensions are all fine

Post by Border Bongo » Wed Oct 03, 2007 5:00 pm

My bongo gives a squeal when first starting which sounds like a slipping belt, but the tensions of those are fine. My mechanic suggested it might be a loose belt inside the automatic gearbox, a tension which could be easily adjusted from the outside, but which but he felt unsure about dealing with. He suggested a specialist might easily fix it. Anyone got same experience or suggestion please?

Is it worse after standing over night when it's raining?

if so and the air con and alternator belts are reasonably
tight try a little squirt of WD40 on the belts don't wet them
through see if that cures it you may have to repeat it
from time to time but silence is golden.

"Mechanic's" talking pish BB. There's no belts in the autobox and if there was it wouldn't affect it in neutral. Think about changing your mechanic if that's his level of knowledge.

The WD40 trick does work (in moderation) - it might also be a manifold stud problem which "seals" itself when it gets warm and expands. Plenty info in the "Search"

Border Bongo, this sounds similar to a noise a have had from my Bongo. I thought mine was belt screech, so removed, cleaned and refitted them with correct tension. When it didnt quieten things down I tried squirting WD40 behind the water pump pulley, result, instant quiet. Had the water pump replaced today by the local Mazda garage, and the Bongo was nice and quiet until the exhaust back box fell off on the way to Southampton this evening. Have just ordered a new back box but the screech has gone.

Slightly off thread but,
Be aware a hissy belt can be a sign of water from somewhere getting on it.
WD40 can certainly quieten things down but also check for any water especially around the water pump area or pinpricks in the hoses around the area.

Could it be the famous No 1 manifold stud ?? Would expect that to be a constant squeal.

I sprayed WD40 on belts as suggested, squealing stopped, this forum is great, thanks!

Better bet than WD40, is proper belt dressing, it's made for the job.
Also check that the sides of belts haven't worn down and the belt bottoms out, you can tension all you like but it won't make them drive.

at least you know it's nothing to do with
the auto box, mine only does it when it's
been wet overnight and seems to be the
air con belt rather than the alt belt.

i had the same slipping belt noise with all belts at correct tension and it turned out to be the crank pulley ,its rubber mounted and had sheared off.
