spare wheel?

Post by flippa » Mon Oct 01, 2007 6:31 pm

   just discovered my rear wheel has been slashed overnight .....i was'nt alone two other cars were done also ....i actually only went out to put in my new 12 month tax disc #-o and discovered this oh dear...it happened at 4 this morning ....so now i gotta fix it took the slashed wheel off ....the spare needed some air so pumped it up ...put the spare on intending to drive to nearest kwikfit but the spare failed under the weight when i let the jack down think the valves knackered all the air came out #-o
i left it on and gave up, quoted 72 quid by kwikfit and thats me bringing the wheel to them for a replacement tyre  i will get on the phone in the morn and get it sorted .....my question now i have the spare off, its had its day what should i replace it with , and what size tyre should i fit on the spare i have the 195.......215 set up ....btw i don't live here just passing through  (should have passed through) but could happen anywhere, unfortunately

Sorry to hear about that Flippa, the scum have to do something with their stanley knives to keep their tiny minds occupied (pity they dont decorate each other with them instead eh?)

I take it when you say the spare failed, you mean the  SPACESAVER  ?

If you have different sized tyres fitted front and rear, replace the spare with a tyre of either size that you already have fitted on to the bongo.

Treat the spacesaver replacement as a spare, (then get the punctured tyre repaired)...That way it wont really matter if you have the wrong sized tyre fitted as a "get you home" / "get you to kwik fit" temporary wheel.

£72 for a tyre??? What size are they? That's a lot of money for a 15".

Hope your luck improves

cheers Big -D ....iam trying not to think bad thoughts ](*,) ...i can only take it they have done me a little favour :? are you saying i should keep the (spare) spacesaver wheel and just get it repaired ......i have 195s onthe front
and 215s on the rears they are 15s ....annoying only had the rears replaced 2 months ago ....yeah i thought the 72 quid was excessive ......i will have to pay out though for a mobile fitter but i will try and get a better price first.....funny tho i saw an ad on tv earlier, before i found the damage kwikfit 4 new tyres get 25% discount .... with the other 2 motors who had 3 tyres slashed makes 4 in all  ...i wonder would they do us a deal ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

.

The spacesaver wheel needs to be melted into a few paperweights, as its not much use as anything else.

A spacesaver replacement is a standard (full sized) usually steel wheel, with a full sized tyre mounted onto it.

It still easily fits into the recess previously occupied by the spacesaver, despite it being quite a bit bigger.(and safer)

It's a pity you live so far away,as i have an abundence of spacesaver replacements.

£72 is far too much money in my opinion, i can get a low profile 100w 18" tyre for that!

Is there any bongo converters/dealers local (ish) to you?

They can often accumulate standard bongo steel wheels if they upgrade to alloys.

There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to pick up as many wheels as you desire,in the tyre size you require, for around £15 each.

That's wheel&tyre included.

Please do check the tyre carefully though, for tread depth, condition, and load rating (96 all round to be on the safe side)

My spacesaver did exactly the same - the valve had perished where it goes through the rim. I just got a new valve put in and it worked OK, but it's definitely better to get a full size spare asap.
