Cheers DP...Its as well i resisted the temptation then :wink:

They have been doing a lot of those cheapo road resurfacing jobs where i work, and ive noticed a lot of the loose chippings have embedde themselves into the waxoil in places,this is why i queried it on here before i attempted to jet wash them off :shock:

Thanks mike, they were already fitted when i bought my bongo, i just painted em to give a different look... they are original mazda items, nut quite rare it would seem... (but, not as rare as the chrome versions fitted to rushmons bongo)

Waxoil v underseal

Underseal- a hard painted surface that provides a barrier to anything thrown at it. Disadavantages- it can crack after time and let moisture in to corrode your vehicle ,even worse you wont know its going on, Also it doesn't give full coverage. but consider the fact that european cars are generally undersealed and not waxoiled and they seem too do ok for quite a few years.
Waxoil - Surprisingly an oily waxy substance that never seems to set. it penetrates in places that ordinary underseal never gets to and inhibits rust.
the disadvantages are that it washes off after time and working on the underneath of your vehicle becomes a messy business,
The key thing to consider now is that your Bongo has been unprotected from Road salt and the elements for some time.
Also undersealing a vehicle after it has left the production line is never as good a job as one done before all the mechanicals are added etc.

Also Waxoiling will need to be regulary checked to see it is still a valid protector.
My choice was to after pressure washing and drying off for 2 days first) paint the underneath of the car with galvanised paint ( 5 spray tins from Screwfix @£3 a 400ml a tin) then get the vehicle undersealed to provide a hard protective barrier to the galvanisation layer and finally get the car waxoyled- and get the vehicle up on a lift atr least once ayear just to see if the waxoil needs topping up in places. my local garage lets me use their lift (for inspection only)- does this all seem like overkill? For most yes but as i live in Cumbria wwhere they still put chippings on the road and it rains almost every day then I think its worth it
To summarise:
cleaning and painting with galvanisng paint myself £20
Underseal £ 60 @local garage
Waxoil did it myself with kit of Ebay 60 quid- given the choice again-Id get someone else to do it and pay a lot more money ITS MESSY! allthough I'm not sure that the insides of doors double skinned sections would be done also I would still probably have to check allof the drain holes etc for blockages etc.
I say, Do You Bongo?....... RATHER!

There's no harm in doing a thorough job john...peace of mind, and more power to you :wink:

I plan on having the bongo re-waxoiled,summer of each year from now on... that should do the trick :wink:

Just waxoiled mine (with black waxoil) and it is a very messy job, but quite satisfying when you've finished.
Biggest problem I had was getting the ruddy stuff off me - white spirit, hand cleaner, washing up liquid etc - nothing seemed to shift it completely. Then, whilst I was refuelling with veggie oil, I spilt some on my hand and, yep, the waxoil came off and left my hands beautifully soft :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Margerine is very good for cleaning it off aswell :wink:

Modern cars are good but they don't use underseal. They do use lots of seam sealer and stone-chip, both are semi-setting and very flexible. They also use a liquid wax treatment that is very high flash and sets quickly to leave a thick waxy deposit. The stone chip is classed as a high build paint layer.

I just have 2 wheel ramps and, although cramped, they just about gave enough height to do the job.
