slightly different take on the locked out saga

I don't know if anyone can help me but I have managed to lose the only key for my bongo. However, as I have remote central locking and have a spare blipper thingy, I can get into the car. I read on a previous post that one place to get the number for a replacement key was by looking at the barrel of the door lock but that this could cause damage. As I can get into the car and have easy access to the barrel of the ignition, does anyone know if I can get the information I need from there?

Also, anyone any ideas on how long it takes for a new key to arrive from Mazda/ what it costs?

Oh dear - not a great first post!
Sorry I can't help, but hopefully somebody knows and will reply.
Mine only came with one key, so the first thing I did was to get others cut - I bet you do the same next time.

Have you checked all your paperwork in case the key number is there somewhere, if not how about asking where you bought it, just in case they may have a spare and just did not give it to you. Apart from that it may be worth phoning one of the locksmith mobiles they might know how to get it or even the rac or aa. Good luck.

I thought that the ignition barrel does have a number but you will need to get the plastic cowling off first - not sure why I think this as I've never done it but there you go...not much help really sorry

Sorry to hear of your present difficulty.

We found a small magnetic box (hidden under the wing or chassis area) containiing a spare key. It might be worth a careful check for such a box -I know others have found similar devices for holding a spare key.

Sorry to hear about your lock mishap Chrise...Welcome to the forum anyway...there has been some good suggestions on here so far.

Let's get ya sorted.

You say you still have a spare remote fob for the central locking?

Remove the driver's side door card.

You will see rods going to the rear of the barrel,with white plastic clips holding them in various places.

These plastic clips are quite delicate,and brittle.

Use a screwdriver to CAREFULLY prise them from the rods. (you'll need to rotate the clip to get it at an angle which can be prised)

The clip should be "unclipped " from the end of the longest rod, which will then make it "slideable".

There is a retaining spring on the barrell itself,this will need sliding out with some mole grips, or long nose pliers.

The number on the barrell is facing towards the rear of the bongo,on the barrell's side.

You MAY be able to view the five digit nuumber with the use of a mirror,and a small torch, but you will probably have to remove the barrell.

Take the number ( or barrell ) to your nearest Mazda dealer,then get the old wallet out

Get em to make TWO keys!

Doesn't have to be a Mazda dealer. A professional locksmith will cut one using computer controlled cutter to the correct profile if you have the number, for about a fiver.

I have posted on this before, as have others. Harfords locksmiths in Dewsbury is one example around here. (NOT Halfords!).

Just a quick note to say a big thanks for all the suggestions - all sorted now!

Didn't find pat's lovely sounding magnetic box, and having looked on the ignition barrel I only managed to find a parts number not a key number.

Therefore, I went down bigdaddycain's route with taking the door skin off. Have to say that I have seen this explanation elsewhere but not with quite the same level of detail - I was convinced I was going to break something but you made it sound sufficiently easy for me to have a go - it all worked a treat!

I am now a proud owner of two keys!
