reverses sometimes

one day my bongo wouldn't reverse, I checked the transmission oil, it was low, so i filled it up. It reversed straight away. I went on my travels, then it wouldn't reverse again, It didn't reverse for quite a while, then one day it did. It now reverses whenever it wants to. Sometimes it feels like it is in neutral though when it is in reverse and nothing happens. There is no leak. Can anyone help

thats got to be an auto gearbox mechanic job, sounds a bit technical to me, lee

Sounds just like a brake-band that needs adjusting. Definitely a job for an auto-gearbox specialist, but if it is just adjustment it shouldn't be too expensive.

Torque convertor?..I had similar symptoms on my scorpio years back, it got progressively worse,till the day it would not upshift higher than 3rd gear...it turned out a new torque convertor was needed.

Do you find its more likely to happen when cold?

As a temporary,try selecting "p" leave it there for a few seconds,straight into "d"..then quickly into "R"...I found this worked for a few weeks on my scorpio whilst i saved for a new torque convertor,dunno if it will work on a bongo though...

Hmmm, can't see how the torque convertor would do that BDC - sounds more like the rear clutch as it is engaged in both reverse and top gears

Oh, right... I'm going from (admittedly) a rather sketchy memory now...
Those were the symptoms though, and as far as i remember,the auto box specialist bloke replaced the torque convertor... This was maybe six months or so after the complete box had been reconditioned.

Perhaps i'm getting mixed up with the symptoms i had when the box was knackered! ( i hope not for flipsters sake

)
This was late 90's, my brain has turned to rice pudding since then

I agree with Dandy. If the fault was in the torque converter, it wouldn't go forwards any better than it goes in reverse. Being directly connected to the engine, the torque converter turns the same way all the time, regardless of the direction of travel selected.
