slight oil leak?

Post by brorabongo » Thu Aug 16, 2007 8:34 pm

There are fresh signs of oil on the coolent hose under the turbo, and the turbo itself looks dirty with oil in places. I took the U bend pipe off by loosening the two philips screws clamps, and there is dirty oil inside so guessing it has been seeping from here.

Is it fresh oil or something from an old incident and/or accumulated over a long period. Is it worth gunking it off and seeing how quickly it reappears. I did this on my engine block near the rocker cover (I also gently tightened the rocker cover nuts in the area) and found it never reappeared i.e. it was old stuff. Might be a first step to do this, then you can reassess whether it can be left and if so for how long. But what do the BF techies think (of which I am not one!)

PS - I gunked my oil off using my compressor and the paraffin gun that came with my spray gun set. I then sprayed the gunk off with water. Worked a treat compared to using a brush. Watch out you dont fill the cabin with gunk mist though, although the mist I got in my cab didnt seem to leave any lingering probs which was just as well! Maybe use a plastic sheet to protect the cabin + be frugal with the spray shots

Is it very black and sticky?? Could be the oily, carbony, gunge the EGR recycles into the inlet system Brora - it seems to creep everywhere. It's a pretty big job to get it all cleaned out but consider blanking the EGR system off by disconnecting and plugging the vacuum pipe. Plenty of info and pics in a search.

Thanks guys, I will clean the area and see what happens. It does seem to be sticky, and very dark black. I had already (months ago) blocked off the vacuum pipe with a bolt, just hope I blocked the right one

Is the air going into the turbo at that U tube or comming out? ( could'nt be Bothered to follow the air duct around the other side  )

no i think there is some oil present there all the time, most bongos ive seen have a dirty patch on the air filter which corrosponds to the air intake to the turbo. its an old dirty engine so your bound to get som,e oil.
the turbo needs some oil running to it in order to lubricate it, when ours went it was the coolant pipes that went and not the oil seals.
