I don'y know what it is, but its broke!

Post by DickieP » Sun Aug 12, 2007 6:00 pm

hile going out to check the scavanger fan (which was working fine, thanks for the help everyone), I found this little broken thing.

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=4 ... =847930656

As you can hopefully see, its located beneath the centre console on the drivers side, below where the ashtray would be. It has 2 thin pipes coming out of it, one of which appears to be snapped off, and also has some plugged wires leading from it. Its stamped with a Mitsubishi logo if that helps! When starting the engine, a tiny blast of air is emitted, and it continues to blow air whilst the engine is running, the flow can be stopped with a finger.

What is this? Why is it broken? How do I mend it??? Is it something extremely serious, as Im supposed to be driving from Wales down to Dorset tomorrow. Help (again!)!!!!!!

Just had a look in the workshop manual, and it looks to be a solenoid that's part of the EGR system. Have you got a hot melt type glue gun? - or something similar - I would be tempted to try and bodge it back in place until you can get a 2nd hand replacement from a one of the Bongo spares places that advertise on this site.

Fit something solid into the rubber pipe and blank it off completely as a temporary/permanent repair. blanking it of will disable the EGR system which a lot of people favour on these older vehicles.

Do a search for more info. :)

This is a relief! The bore of the pipe and the hole its supposed to be joined to is only 2-3 mm max, so do you reckon I'd be OK just whacking a screw in each end... it wouldnt be under hardly any air pressure.

i believe the one on the left is for the egr valve and the one on the right raises the engine revs slightly when you turn on the aircon. one of our pipes was disconnected and when i plugged it back on the revs didnt drop on tickover when put aircon on.

I see, its the one on the right as you look in from the drivers side... would blanking it off have any adverse affect on the air con system?

if im correct with the correct solonoid it shouldnt make any difference to the aircon, just seemed to put a little more strain on the engine at low revs ie tickover when the aircon is on.
it dropped it by about 60 rmp so from 750rpm at tickover went down to 690 rpm.
if you dont want to risk it then just dont turn on the aircon and it wont make any difference at all.
if however its the solonoid for the egr valve then it should make the engine run slightly better as the egr valve wont be working therefore running hotter and more efficient.
either way it shouldnt hamper the van a great deal. i had ours running nearly 14 month before i realised the solonoid wasnt working and repaired it.

Do you think the 2 solonoids are the same, if so I could swap them over so the aircon one was A-OK, and it would be the egr one that was kaput?

all right here goes.
the solonoid on the left with the black multiplug is for the egr valve.
the one with the white plug is for the aircon rev lifting thingybob.

disconect the vacuum pipe off the right one with aircon on the revs drop.
plug the pipe into the left one no difference.
plug the left vacuum pipe into the right solonoid and the revs dont drop.

hope thats making sense.

so it appears that the right hand one is needed to increase the revs for the aircon and it wont work just plugging it into the left solonoid.

I reckon I might have a play with it in the light tomorrow, Im sure I can rig something up to reconnect it... its snapped off just where the pipe attaches to back of the solonoid - exactly the wrong place for it to be easily fixable!
