Storage Box Options

Post by Ian and Nicole » Tue Aug 07, 2007 10:13 pm

Hi,

We are the proud parents of a P reg Bongo. We are considering taking the in laws and our 2 young kids to France on Vacation later in the year. I am concerned about storage space for luggage and paraphanalia and considering storage box options. The vehicle we have is a raise roof option rather than a BongoLOW. I have heard about back boxes that I assume fit on the tow Bar?

Could you please advise me on the pros and cons of these options. I have found 540L top storage boxes at around £170 new so have this option but would need to get roof bars for our Bongo in addition to this.

Do you know where I could get one of the back boxes (if they are any good)

Thanks a lot in advance

Hi, The back boxes are normally secured via a rack / frame to the tailgate but I don`t know how you would lift the tailgate with the extra weight on it. The back boxes are normally available through motorhome dealers or someone like Towsure but they aren`t cheap, have you considered fitting a towbar and getting a small trailer which may be more practical. Hope this helps .:) ...
If I had all the money I ever spent on my Freda ............ I`d spend it on my Freda.

hi Ian and Nicole

we have a freetop (raise roof version) and happily use a very large (510litres - a thule vision 850) roofbox on it, and take a folding ladder so that we have full access to it, the only problem that we forsee is that if we have to stop anywhere to stay overnight and have to raise the roof for our kids to sleep in then we'd have to empty the box too.

I use a Bak-Rak which I either then attach bike carriers to (if I'm taking bikes) or what the DIY stores call a 'cushion box' if I want extra storage (usually for wetsuits etc.) - something like this : http://tinyurl.com/24kdwv

I have also recently made a roof rack which I used extensively on my hols over the last 2 weeks, I'll be updating that thread when I get chance.

Kyham do a similar thing to a Bak Rak as do Thule but they start to get v.expensive if you want a real one'. The cushion box works for me albeit it's a bit Heath Robinson.

My website shows the Bak Rak with bikes on or Google their website.
