cam belt advice
Does anyone know if there is a way to access the cam belt to check it is not slack, without taking all the gubbins off?

Hi, there is no easy way of checking the cambelt without taking the cover and the associated bits off, the tensioner assembly should not let it run slack as if it did the belt could jump a tooth with possable disasterous results. If you suspect it may be iffy I would get it changed for peace of mind.

If I had all the money I ever spent on my Freda ............ I`d spend it on my Freda.
Thank you for your advice, thought there may be no easy way of getting to the belt, you just helped to confirm this for me. The man at the garage said there could be a possibility that the tensioner is faulty from the last belt change as we have a rattling noise on tick over. Although he has also said it could be a pulley. All about elimination really.
We have had many recommendations as to what the noise could be but after seeing the local bongo man today it does make sense what he is saying. It is one of those noises (Hard to explain) and it goes away when you turn the wheel on tick over and when accelerating. Other than the slight rattling the vehicle runs so smooth. Has anyone else out there had similar experiences

many thanks for your advice, we was told this same thing by Haydn on this site. We just went to find a mechanic to sort the problem and when we spoke to Lac and he had a listen we came away from the idea and went with the possible cam belt problem.
However we have progressed today, i have managed to get to the cam belt, only to discover all seems fine and the right tightness, no slack in it whatsoever.
This leads us back to what you are explaining, as other than a pulley or hydraulic tappits (Which are the other two things Lac said it could be) the problem must be the power steering pump!
To confirm, after reading your post i checked it up to 3000 revs and yes the noise goes away.
Thank you very much for your advice and knowledge as it has definitely helped to put our mind to rest and feel confident to go away on holiday this weekend. Fingers crossed this is the problem and we have a stress free time away.

The 2.5 WL engine doesn't have hydraulic tappets to the best of my knowledge. The diagrams show manual adjusters.
Just had a thought........maybe they do have hydraulic tappets AND have adjusters - the VW boxer engine has this weird setup.........can anyone with a workshop manual confirm any of this?????
