Cigarette lighter problem...

Actually ... I live in Cape Town, work in Douala, and the Bongo lives permanently at my folks' place in Gawcott ! Needless to say it does not get used much

Some adapters don't like some sockets and they keep losing the connection. I have had to wrap the flex around odd things before to keep phone chargers and the like reliable.
However, my I3 is fine but a friends does exactly what yours is doing so I think it is a common problem with Garmin. If it's guaranteed take it back and ask for it to be fixed. You may find a full reset helps in the meanwhile.

Thanks everyone for your replies on this, I tried the glasspaper trick as
suggested by Naughtydog (thanks for that) but to no avail - I'm beginning
to suspect the Garmin i3 itself as others have pointed out because I noticed today that it lost power as I hit a slight bump in the road - strange
though, as the adaptor itself fits nice and snug in the cigarette lighter socket without any wobble or play.
Anyway, I'm having the cambelt replaced tomorrow (Bongo's done 60,000 miles!) so I'll get the mechanic to have a quick check of any dodgy connection with the socket.

I have a MIo gps. yesterday it came up with a warning of battery low even though it was connected with lead to car. Then it switched off. Contacted mio who suggested try charginmg battery at home on mains charger, when i did this the light showed battery fully charged but when i unplugged unit is dead. Mio now accept battery fault. If you have a dry battery set up it might be worth it to put in a set of batteries even when connected to car .
