BONGO ENGINE OIL
What is recommended as the appropriate/best oil to use in the Bongo TD engine - does it matter what type, grade, make is used?

I use a semi synthetic 10/40 weight oil, changed with filter every 5000 miles,or yearly, whichever is sooner.
I think that 10/30 oil is the type that you are supposed to use,but apparently its not a good move if your bongo engine has a few miles behind it...

OIL? I use the stuff they sell in Costco for diesels. 20 litres around £25, I change the filter twice a year and the oil every 3000km as I burn Veg Oil. But if you Google API then you will begin to understand the codes on the oil and can see that £26 for 4.5 litres aint much different to £5 for 4.5 litres. Particularly in a slow revving diesel.
The recommended oil change is so regular that buying expensive oil just aint worth it!

Is the recommended change every 3,000miles due to the oil's available 10 years ago? while Magnetic being more advanced, lasts longer, thus less changes required. This is good news to us as we could be doing upto 20,000 a year.Seeker wrote:OIL? 20k miles a year - phew you are travelling. Better get on the veg oil quick. I cant believe the oils have improved by that much since the mid 90s. I reckon the Bongo diesel (with its high compression head?) gives the oil a hammering. Best to change it regularly (may risk 5k intervals with Magnatec if I had to make a guess, but no more). What do the BF soothsayers have to say?

Hi Mike,
I don't think the Bongo is any higher compression than any other diesel, it's just that all diesels use much higher compression than petrol engines.
I am not an expert on oils, so I wouldn't know how much they have improved in the last 10 years, but I'm sure the other Colin on here would.
I do a high mileage a year too (25k - 30k), but fortunately for my Bongo most of it is in other vehicles. At least someone else is paying for the fuel and maintenance.
I do wish my works van was as nice to drive as my Bongo though.
