Our Bongo has been making a grating/ clinking noise when it is revved hard, normally when pulling away from junctions/ accelerating:
- appears to be coming from middle to rear near side
- sounds like cross between metal being drawn across a cheese grater and
glass bottles clinking together
- only occurs when accelerating/ revving hard but not when standing still
- can hear the noise clearly inside and outside the Bongo
- our mechanic can not see anything obvious
PLEASE HELP!!

Sounds like a bearing disintergrated!
Jack each wheel up in turn and see if there is anyplay when you try to pull it in and out!

Thanks for the reply, but don't think the noise is coming from a wheel and does not get worse when cornering. Might be worth a check though!

Have you lifted the engine bay covers and had a good listen. Maybe a crude ear trumpet made from a length of garden hose, maybe with a funnel on the end away from your ear, might help locate a source of the noise above the general engine bay cacophony - not practical while driving of course!

is it only when driving, you say revving but not when standing still.
if its when driving its either wheels, gearbox or rear axle/propshaft. is yours 2 wheel drive or 4.

We have 4wd.
Only occurs when pulling away from junctions and accelerating at relatively low speeds (below 30mph).

so it occurs when reving hard but only up to 30 mph? when starting off not while crusing, how about breaking?
I am wondering if you have something loose in your tool compartment thats sliding back when you accelerate. probably a silly idea

No noise on braking but occassionally when going over pot holes and bumps.
Quite nosy from outside.

Could it be something like a loose baffle in the exhaust?
