Shunt Up the Rear !
Hi Bongo People.
It is I.He of the Centre Icky Thing. I feel I have been punished for lack of knowledge of these lovely vehicles.Took the Family out for a run today.(They like to travel in the back. They feel like they are on the Orient Express )" Posers that they are.
Got a shunt up the backside whilst stationary at a roundabout. Crimped the tailgate and split the rear bumper.( I did so love it as it was )Tailgate I am sure they can fix. Bumper I dont know.
Thing is. I got hit by a young lady at Uni in a nice newish Vauxhall Astra. It shook her up pretty bad so my dismay had to go on hold.( Spoilt the whole day for me really ) Didn't cry tho.
Her Dad rang me this eve.Good Ol Dads!
Wants me to get an estimate to try and save his Daughters No Claims.I was young once so I am happy to try and oblige.
I live in the Portsmouth area. Any Bongoliers out there Know of any repair shops that wont screw these good people before I tackle the Insurance route ?

If the bumper and tailgate are damaged, then get a decent bodyshop to check the floorpan in the rear is not damaged as well.
To be honest, a new bumper sprayed and a repair to tailgate and probably straightening the bumper mounting points is going to be the wrong side of £500 unless you have a very friendly bodyshop and are prepared to accept a 'fix it' as opposed to a 'put it back as it was'.
If daddy baulks a little at your quote - then just remind him you are not claiming whiplash as well - most people would!.

A shunt up the rear can also disrupt the cars designed geometery, it may be insignifcant, but your rear wheels could be out of alignment to the front and seriously effect the cars performance in the wet and under emergency breaking. so although there is cosmetic damage it is worth getting a proper look over it to see if the chasis is at all bent.
something else you might find.... in this day and age of insurance claims.
most bodyshops are only wiling to undertake, insurance jobbies, and will offer you quite a high price for the work if it is not being done on the insurance, just to make you think sod it, i will do it through the insurance, you really have to shop around for a very very friendly garage, or a very small business that does the body work.
my wife dented the wing on our 4x4 every garage we went to asked is it an insurance claim. NO. the cheapest quote i got was £800 and that was for the minimum amount of work possible. I ended up doing it myself for less than the insurance excess, that included New wing, new light, and spraying it myself. you couldnt even tell that a new wing had been put on. it cost £330 and about 1 day in total as i took my time spraying the wing. it took 45 mins to get the old wing and light out and fit the new one.
they love going through the insurance company, its like a license to print mony.

Shunt up the rear.
Thanks everyone.
It's suprising the silly little things you tend to overlook in simple situations like this. On the advice of members who responded to my post I rang my Insurance first thing this morning and gave the details of the shunt.Told them of Dads request and that I was willing to make the effort and they put it down as ( For information only ) Should Daddy baulk as was pointed out,it is at least down on record. Thanks Franco.
Got three estimates for him. Madmile. You must be in the know! Every ballpark figure came in around the figure you quoted.
Feel like Iv'e done my bit now. Time spent, hours wasted.I am fully comp and protected.Going to be without a vehicle why it's its in for repair. So why bother?
Because of sites like this that restore ones faith in human nature.Thats why. Crickey youv'e even got your own Insurance boff.
What a find!
Thanks everyone.
Lash me to the wheel and feed me toast!
