Metal strut behind 2 DIN space

Post by mp3oplecarrier » Tue Jul 03, 2007 12:52 am

Does anybody know if the upright metal strut thaty you can see when you look in the radio gap is structural, or if it is just there to provide an anchor for the stereo?

I want to mount my head unit and PC monitor 'sunk in' for stealth purposes, but the damn thing's in the way!

It is structural.

If you remove the glove box you can have a good look into that space.

IT ACTUALY HOLDS THE DASH IN PLACE, I WAS GOING TO GIVE IT A LARGE WHACK LAST WEEK WHEN TRYING TO FIT A NEW CD PLAYER WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE A LITTLE LONGER THAN A STANDARD ONE JUST TO GIVE ME A LITTLE MORE ROOM BUT THEN THOUGHT BETTER OF IT.

If it's just holding the dash I still may be tempted to fit another one further over and then cut it...

I'll get into my scuba gear tomorrow and try and get a better look!

You won't get in with twins but might manage with a pony!

I think it may be a vital safety item in a crash.

Pippin - I think mp3oplecarrier may be refering to the thin pressed steel peice which may well support the dash, but are you not refering to the 2 inch round bar that extends under the glovebox - and as you say will certainly be structural.
I cant see the bit behind the radio being structural, but having said that I have not looked at it with a view to moving it.

Yes, I was referring to the big round bar that goes all the way across.

I thought that was the thing he was asking about.

No, this bit is only about 3cm wide and 1mm thick at most. You would only see it if you removed the radio.

Thanks Madmile, that was what I was thinking of, I've only had the chance to look at it through the front opening but it looks like it is welded to the very obviously structural bar that goes across the car as a rear mount for the stereo and probably a support for the dash.

I think I'll find my goggles and get under there with my angle grinder tomorrow!
