What do I need to put my surf boards on the roof?

Post by armole » Sun Jul 01, 2007 6:18 pm

Could anyone tell me how to put two surfboards on the roof and how to tie them down. They are 7ft mini mals so relatively light. I can't really afford a roof rack at the moment.
Cheers

I like to use the weighted method.

Thank goodness I read your name right  well you dont have to buy an expensive roof rack, just visit your local car boot sale and pick up a gutter clamp one, I am sure you could try it before you buy it, the two bar type will do after all you only want to put a couple of pieces of bent polystyrene on the roof so it is not exactly a ton weight is it. But seriously there are loads of cheap roof bars out there that wil more than do the job, have a look but don't go paying daft money like some silly buggers do on evil bay. Happy motoring.

There are at least a couple of ways to do this. I have been putting my boards directly on the roof and holding them down with some straps that fit through some brackets I bought from B&Q. My old post on the subject are on this site somewhere or have a look at my website (still under construction so don't be too harsh). In the Bongo section under 'carrying stuff' you'll see a picture showing what I mean.

Recently I bought an old set of roof bars for £2 at a car boot sale. They aren't pretty but I thought I'd give them a try. I drilled a hole in the base plate and just bolted them on to the AFT - works a treat.

Whatever you do remember to use Stainless steel bolts or only leave others in for a short time - I left the brackets on for a year and the bolts rusted - took me an age to get them out thankfully with no damage but it could have been a lot worse.

Good luck and happy surfing :D

The Bongo shop sells custom made roof bars for £89.75 I purchased a pair 3 years ago ( stailess steel, the ones on sale now are black powder coated but the same desighn ) I cover them in the grey pipe insulation tube from any DIY, but i leave a 10 cm gap in the middle of each tube which makes strapping the boards on a lot easier, the only problem is the height of the Bongo, I've yet to find a decent pair of steps ,I carry two long boards in bags, a 9 foot and a 10 foot plus a short board, no problem whatsoever.
