It's a common thing and I think all auto boxes have them, my space cruisers did and they did tend to collect a few bits all the time, it was nothing to worry about just normal wear and tear.

Yep, gunge on mine too. It's also best to use a lint free cloth so that fibres can't get into the oil and cause the valves to stick.

And I don't believe anyone who reckons that the box only holds 4 litres of ATF, I've put 6 litres in mine!.

Remember the torque convertor holds quite a bit - thats why the level is checked with the engine idling.

Have admit I let mine drain for around 1.5 hours whilst having dinner etc. These are handy for draining via the dipstick tube, cost a big fat fiver:

am i right in thinking you either have to take sump off or pump it up out of the dipstick tube.which is the prefured method :?

I just used the pump to remove most of the oil before removing the sump to save throwing it over myself. I have to admit I don't see the point of changing the oil unless you are going to remove the sump and allow it to drain fully. Can't see the worth of leaving some of it behind with all the crud that sit's in the sump. After all it's not a difficult job to do fully. :D

where do you get new gaskets from?
ChrisEm

Post by ChrisEm » Sun Jul 01, 2007 10:01 pm

You shouldn't need one, the gaskets are not glued on either face and you should find that the sump separates cleanly. Unless of course someone has used some silicone or similar at some point previously.
