Electrically operated air valve

Post by eribabongo » Fri Jun 29, 2007 10:51 pm

Hi,
I am new to forum despite owning a Bongo for nearly 3 years, trouble free motoring until now. I am looking for a bit of advice after having trouble on holiday last week, with my caravan . I started to notice a loss of power and a misfire, was not towing caravan at the time but very concerned. On looking at the engine I noticed a pipe off a small electrical valve was missing. There should be a pipe running from the air cleaner hose to one side of the valve and 2 small rubber pipes coming from the other end of the valve. It's located on the top left of the engine, looking from the drivers side. Any help would be appreciated!

I think that the 'electrical valve you refer to is one way air flow valve, it is usually green, mine broke and i didn't replace it, as it has some function to do with exhaust gas recycling, which is disabled on my van.
I think that all you need to do is block the hole on the black junction which is fixed to the top left of cylinder head......try leaving the engine on tickover and putting your finger over the hole. It's difficult to describe but to help, do a search for 'inlet manifold sludge'.......it may not seem relevent but I think if you read the whole thread, you'll find pics and info which will help.

PS: If you state your location, you may find another member is close by who could help

Just a bit more:

I assume you've checked oil and coolant levels and van is generally well maintained..........

The problem you describe will be fuel or air related almost certainly. If blocking the air flow at the black solenoid doesn't help, then you may have air blockage or leak in the intake system:
1. Check air intakes at front of vehicle are not blocked
2. With drivers seat lifted, check at top right hand side that the big black plastic hose which connects to a curved metal junction which connects to the inlet manifold is fitted good and tight. Also little rubber pipe which comes of the curved metal junction must be fitted good and tight.
3. Air filter should be clean.
4. Fuel filter may be blocked. Drain the filter of undesirables by loosening the little white plastic screw thing on underside of filter and draining until pure diesel comes out.
5. Apparently there's a little filter on top of fuel pump which can get blocked and cause fuel starvation. Never looked for it myself but maybe worth a try.

I think this is a reasonable fault finding route but i'm not a mechanic...just sorted loads of probs with my van with hep from this forum.
