Tyre Shortages ?

Post by KeithB » Thu Jun 28, 2007 7:57 am

The tyres on the 95 Bongo I have just bought (newly imported) have loads of tread on the front but not much on the back. The back are badly cracked on the sidewall and tread and the front on the tread. Given the mileage is only about 25k miles i was wondering if the rears are actually the original tyres from new.

Anyway, back onto point. Given these are all Jap tyres I have decided for safety sake to go for new tyres on all four corners.

I have been looking through the forums trying to decide on which tyres and looking on the various web tyre sites such as black circles, my tyres, best buy etc and came to the conclusion I would go for the Contis recommended ion the fact sheet. Only problem is that I cant get the 215/65100T for the rears anywhere.

All my local tyre retailers told me that they are out of stock at the distributors and that they wont be back in until August at the earliest . I rang a couple of the web sites and although they appear to have been happy to take my order online when I asked them to check they came back and told me that they were not available.

To make sure I rang up Continental direct and they confirmed that no more till at least August. I had noticed on the websites that the tyre is available in the H rating (which is more expensive) so I asked Continental if they were available and they said that they were also awaiting manufacture and they would be even longer. (Whatt hey did say was had i tried Uniroyal as they make those as well) . I did call one of the websites back and they said they could get the H rated tyre but I am not sure that I want to risk finding out in a few days that they cant.

So Today I an going to try and hunt down some H rated tyres and also look at some other lower load rated tyres. I currently have 92 on the front and 96 on the back which is less than the fact sheet recommends. My Bongo has the factory fitted kitchen unit so therefore came out of the factory with only six seats and although I haven’t done the calculation I guess this would mean that I could go for slightly lower load rating as I wont have two heavy adults sitting in the back :-)

Hi Keith

The website that I thought had Conti's have now decided that they can't get them!
I've tried hard to get hold of some but can't. I'd be interested to know if you find any!

Just phoned the guy I get mine from, no problem here, he can get tyres overnight, with a choice:
Sunny make 215's with a H rating for extra load which I suppose the converted bongos need. Full fitted and balanced with flow thru valves at a cost of £35.00 each.
Nangkang make 215's which I have on my flat top, same as above at a cost of £38.00 each. Got to be a bargain eh.
The dealer is here in Wales at Sardis Road Tyres, Factory Road, The Graig, Pontypridd, Tel. 01443 405791.
So far he has beaten all comers on prices for tyres for all our vehicles. Good luck and happy hunting.

I wanted Vredesteins for mine but they couldn't be sourced.

We ended up with Kumho fronts and Jupiter rears in the standard recommended sizes. So far so good and the Kumhos get particularly good write ups when tested.
