engine whine
Hi
I wonder if anyone can answer my question, as it is a bit difficult when dealing with noises. When accelerating away at a moderate to fast rate, there seems to be a noise on top of the usual turbine sound, usually covered by general engine noise, and the only way to describe it is like a kind of zzzz or low frequency whine, terminating in a higher whooooozzzz just before changing up a gear. Please excuse the non- technical description!!!
Thoughts so far are:- turbo working a bit better, or maybe a bearing in one of the many pumps . Does anyone have any idea as to whether we should be looking at any particular area with concern? B.T.W. it is not a particularly loud noise.
Many thanks
Helen

Hi
How about that then!!! Diagnosis by wire..Next question:- can it be fixed easily in situ, and how’s it done?
Thanks

Hi
Can this old stud be got out with one of those extractors that you drill the stud, put a reverse thread stud extractor in, wind the offending piece out , drill the hole and re-tap a new thread? If this is the case, there are lots of locals with machine knowledge, as there are lots of old Russian trucks, tractors and combines, and many of the village folk will know a diesel specialist who should be up to wrangling metal.
Advice much appreciated

Certainly, if you can extract the stud you don't need to drill and helicoil at all. Having said that, a helicoiled thread IS stronger than a plain old cut thread in aluminium..........but I wouldn't drill out a serviceable thread, on principle. If you have to drill the stud out, then yes, you'll have to use a helicoil insert. If you're not confident about doing it, any decent mechanic should be able to do it without any problem.

Hi Haydn
I have looked for broken exhaust manifold stud in previous posts, and saw that you replaced your no.1 stud by drilling out in situ., without removing the manifold. This is precisely what we had in mind , except attempting to use a stud extractor to remove the stud if possible, and fit a replacement. If this fails, and we have to fit a new stud as you did, how do we go about getting one of these helicoils and fitting them? Are they easily available, and are they complicated to fit yourself? We have found someone in our village who may be able to do the donkey work , and our neighbour is taking Tony to see him tonight. No doubt they have helicoils over here, but trying to ask for them is another matter, unless we know what they look like, when explaining is a bit easier. We may speak Bulgarian piece by piece, but technical Bulgarian often results in a few smiles. We tried to buy a bit of lino to cover the Bongo carpets, only to discover that lino means s**t in Bulgarian (couldn’t agree more).
Many thanks in anticipation of your help
Cheers

http://www.hillcliff-tools.com/helicoil.html
is a useful site.
Just type 'helicoil' into ebay. Nearly 200 listings. I'm sure someone would post them to Bulgaria even if you can't buy them locally.

Hi there, I would just take your bongo in point to the problem and ask them to fix it. However !! If after it's been fixed it happens again, it will mean your manifold is warped and will need skimming. Just get the stud sorted first. Yes it can be done in situ. If they can extract the stud fine, just put another in. If they have to drill and helicoil it will still be a good job. The difficult bit is keeping the drill centered. I got a bit of tube which fitted inside the manifold hole and used it to centre a 6mm pilot drill. Then opened that hole out to the correct size for the helicoil. What they have may not be called Helicoil, there ary a few varients but all much the same.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi again
Thanks, Haydn….why didn’t I think of that…we’ve just been down to the chap’s house with a neighbour to point at it and say “fix it”, but he wasn’t there…back tomorrow. Trouble is it’s so hot here it’s a problem to think. The local café owner said it was 43C. yesterday, and 50degrees in the direct sun. The old noggin gets a bit slow under those circumstances. Thanks, also Trev…the piccie was superb, and we’ll show the guy. As you say, there’s no doubt that they are here, but technical “speak” is a bit difficult, and a picture paints a thousand words.
We’ll let you know the prognosis tomorrow when we’ve had a word with the expert.
Muchas Thanks
