Traced a water leak to the thermostat area, dripping either from joint between cover/case or somewhere in that vicinity.

Any known problems in that area so I can give the mechanic a heads up on what might need replacing?

Original cable became seized, but was able to get bonnet open and lubricate cable.

Trouble is, in the process the outer sleeve became stretched ever so slightly resulting in no enough cable appearing at the catch end ...
