Yes the transfer box itself is chain driven but the drive to the front wheels is via a Viscous Clutch which only engages the power when there is a speed difference between front and rear wheels see the diagrams, hence you are 2-wheel drive all the time and 4-wheel drive only when there is slipping ...

Welcome aboard.

The drive is normally to the rear wheels only, there is a viscous coupling behind the gearbox which transfers some drive to the front wheels when it senses a rear wheel start to spin.

Transfer case replacement

Hi all I’m a first time poster had my bongo for about 8 months and was wondering if anyone has put a transfer box in from another vehicle that has the capability to switch range ( 2high, 4hIgh & 4low) as I would prefer 2 wheel drive most of the time with the availability to go into 4wd
