So….i found my issue and it was the woodruff key so the pump was mildly out of place and turning the pump because the nut was holding it tightly and fooling me into thinking it was ok. It was just a bit mangled rather than dropped in the sump but it certainly explains why I couldn’t time

Right update after spending the afternoon out there in the rain and wind. So I’ve got it running which is a start, but runs bad and continually puts out white smoke and rattles worryingly when revved. tried to do the fuel pump timing today and I can’t seem to get it anywhere near 1mm deflection ...

So i did all of that, also cleaned out the contacts on all the electrical plugs I could access. With a squirt of brake cleaner in the inlet it burst into life and settled down after a few terrifying seconds of running like a bag of spanners! Thanks for all your help. I’m sure I’ll need more at some ...

That was disappointing. Fixed the air leak, got really good fuel pressure but still no start. Very frustrating

I just found a tiny split in the return hose that runs behind the intake manifold! It was hidden under the spring clip sucking in air ! Fingers crossed that’s my issue

Good suggestion I may have caught it taking the timing belt cover off I guess. Will do some more investigating

Update, I changed the fluid and cleaned out the filter. I did post elsewhere on here about the nightmare I had getting the sump to seal properly but finally got there in the end after having to hammer it back into flat. So now I get the same issue from time to time but for some reason, pulling over ...

So upon further investigation, I discovered the front edge of the pan was slightly distorted and not sealing properly. I think the previous owner may have even clipped the sump driving over something due to a dent in it. Hammer and assorted punches managed to get it much more flat and I was able to ...

Well I’m ready to push my van off a cliff. 4 times I’ve had to redo the gearbox oil pan due to one corner leaking. Been through a gasket (card type) and 3 attempts at rtv style. Got a cork gasket in the post en route and after that I’ve ran out of options hoping the cork is slightly thicker

Im toying with the idea of dropping the fluid and doing the filter etc etc so i will keep you’s all posted with any changes/improvements next onto the rust!
