Many thanks for your replies, and I was going to include the following info, such a numpty!
Transmission has had its fluid replaced, sump off and sludge removed.
Rear diff checked and levels very good.
Hard to say where the hum is coming from, sounds a bit like the transmission.

Many thanks for your replies, it's going to a certain friendly expert at Plymouth
to have some TLC. Will also have our presumably leaky air con looked at as well, just in case it can be repaired.
