Do I need to drain the axle oil before changing the seals?
I need to change the axle oil seals but presumably need to drain the oil out first and replace after? Also is there a guide to bleeding the brakes?
Thanks

I would drain the oil first.
Start bleeding at the wheel furthest from the brake cylinder and work to doing the nearest one last.

I doubt you'd lose much oil out of them - perhaps a trickle, but if the oil hasn't been replaced then it should be on your list of things to do anyway.
It takes less than 2 litres (2WD model, at least), so you can afford to use the best fully-synthetic stuff!

Hi CLC,
Owing to the fact that you have to draw the shafts I would drain the diff.
I would also check to see if you have a LSD before draining the oil from the diff,(if you dont already know)as this will let you know what kind of oil to refill the diff.
Re your bleeding of the brakes, what is the problem you are having, that makes you think you have to bleed them.
I know the obvious problems but dont know yours.
Cheers Mal..

According to the factsheet you have to undoe the brake pipe when changing the axle oil seals. I last bled breaks in my teens so am a little bit rusty. I was lookig for a generic guide to doing it.

From what I remember you only have to undo the pipe from its mounting - not disconnect it

Hi CLC,the reason I was asking you about why you wanted to bleed the brakes was,I thought you might have been mistaken a fluid leak for a oil leak.
To bleed the brakes follow Johns instructions.
Good Luck.

Oh, and if it's a 2WD model, the axle drain plug is 24mm, and the refill one 23mm (at least mine is...)

When I changed seals, I do not drain oil. Moved first to one side then the other.
Do not miss a single drop of oil It is better to change axle oil every 60,000 km

DemonAV is top dog when it comes to Bongo maintainance. If he wrote a book on how to fix Bongos I reckon it'd sell like hot cakes
