when I had white smoke probs i was told white is water or fuel starvation, and black is injection timing or air starvation (over fuelling, which is why you get it when you first boot the throttle before th eturbo spins up)...
so check the air filter and passages are clear, or if you are unlucky check the operation of the turbo....

The black smoke isnt normal. definitely running rich, a prior owner may have been tampering with the fuel pump settings...

How long have you had it, is it due for a service, as others have said, check filters etc. Diesels do smoke to some extent all the time, noisy smelly bloody things but what the hell we love em. Happy motoring.

Hi david
i've had the bongo 6 months ran it for 7 weeks (over heating probs) resulting in new head ,rad, water pump, 2 thermostats had back now 6 weeks running fine apart from smoke problem had it serviced when i first got it ( i've done approx 1000 miles since service), just changed air filter, and cleaned filter in banjo

 OH! as an afterthought, have a quick check that the engine isn't OVERfilled with oil, thats as deadly to a diesel as not enough oil.... :?
