Fuel Gauge stuck

Pls can anyone help my fuel gauge is stuck on half full

. I have cleaned the points at the tank. I have also taken out the instrument panel and moved the needle on the fuel gauge back to empty. I turned the ignition on the needle moved up slowly as usual and then it gets stuck on half full. I took the keys out the ignition and the fuel needle didn't move backdown any ideas.

Hi jollyroger, when you say you have cleaned the points around the tank,did you check the earth on the sender unit?this often has a poor connection and causr some very strange readings

Jolly, the fuel guage nedle does not drop back to zero but stays at level of fuel in tank. I had the same problem and made a better earth where the bracket is fitted to the fuel tank and watched the needle slowly move to full (Ihad a full tank of diesel as I had only just topped up). The needle seems to take forever to reach full, up to 3 mins, so maybe moving your needle back has compounded the problem and you might really be running on full. Please make sure you have a really good earth on the tank and be patient in watching the gauge rise. Hope this is of some help.

Cheers for the advice, i have cleaned the connectors on the sender unit . Will now go and check the again. I thought the fuel gauge always went back to empty when you turned the ignition off.

Jolly, the bracket that the sender unit sits on seems to make the earth through the rivet attaching it to the tank,make sure this area is clean.

The fuel gauge does not go back to zero when the ignition is turned off, it shows the fuel level reading whether the ignition is on or off. If you do not put more fuel in then you should see the guage drop as you use it up. Hope this helps.

You could also do what I did, make a second earth connection as a back up, this area seems to get dirty easily, since I made the second earth connection there has been no problems, all bongo's have the same tank I think, all show the fuel level with ignition off. Happy motoring.

I made a second earth by using one of the self tapers holding the panel down

I cleaned the connector and made sure it was earthed properly.

I just drilled another small hole, sandpapered around it to bare metal, crimped some wire onto a connector, stuck in a self tapper and used the same tank connection, worked a treat. Happy motoring. (Oh and I gave it a squirt of grease too).
