we went to swanage for the weekend and camped over. in the morning the van would not start. its been a bit lumpy on start up for a while.

i had to turn it over and over until it started then stopped. eventually i got it going.

the same happened today, its not a happy puppy.

so have the plugs given up or maybe the relay? the pugs were replaced a year ago.

where is the relay located?

It could well be the plugs. The relay is behind the battery. Check you have 12v going to the bus bar with ignition on. If you have, almost certainly time to replace plugs. If there is no voltage, then it could be the relay fuse (short strip of wire feeding the relay from the battery.

My plugs lasted less than 1 year. I've now got NGK plugs - always trust them :D

I wonder if it's worth adding a set of plugs to my 'spares to take abroad' list?

Having said that mine starts first time every time at the moment - touch wood etc......

Put a switch in the relay wires and switch plugs off once started. The plugs will last much longer co's without the switch the plugs switch on /off loads of times even after the engine is running. There is a super fact sheet on the subject which even I could follow. Worth while mod.

Not really necessary as the engine will probably start quite happily for most of the year without them. It's only when the temperature drops that you need them. Assuming of course that you will be going abroad in the summer months.

may seem over kill but we carry a full set of belts, filters and now a set of plugs.

we got caught out on a frosty morning in the middle of nowhere, if that had been in the Pyrenees we would have been buggered without parts at hand.
