Another overheating query

Our Bongo's temperature gauge shot right up on a trip a while ago and there was liquid in the engine compartment. We were really near home and the AA said it was OK for us to crawl home and we did. For various reasons - holiday s and so on, we haven't got round to getting it looked at, but we have done a couple of short trips 10 miles or so and the gauge has gone about a third of the dial and stayed there rock solid and there has been no more water leakage. Would it be all right to drive the 40 odd miles to our pet bongo man or would that be a serious mistake?

Serious mistake IMHO - you'd kick yourself if the head cracked due to an airlock......... :?
