how do I access the spare tyre - I've been shown but haven't had to do it so can't remember where to stick the rod. Have put it in the slot at the rear but no joy.

Without getting too gynaecological, you need to insert the male member quite a long way into the hole and then wiggle it around a bit until you get satisfaction.
The short T piece on the end should engage and you then need to turn the handle either clockwise or anticlockwise (yes I know, but it depends which way the cable has been wound!) until the wheel drops down slowly onto the floor.

I think your connotation falls down about half way through Pippin, but I'm not ABSOLUTELY sure!
