To see attached from the guy working on my 02 V6 - I was under the impression there was only one ECU? Is there a separate transmission control unit?

It depends on the age, early machines had separate PCM and TCM in separate boxes, later versions moved to having them on one board in a single box.
I would imagine for an 02 vehicle it would all be in a the same box up under the passenger footwell.
