Footwell carpet removal

Hi all, just joined as a new Bongo owner, picked up a 2001 2.5v6 petrol in white on Thursday, extremely happy to be part of the group! A few jobs are needed to make what is otherwise a good condition vehicle up to scratch.

I’m removing all the carpets to dye them black, seats are out and most of the carpets are out, but I’m struggling removing the cabin footwell carpet, it’s freed up from the trim, pedals, etc.. on both sides, but getting one size pulled through the centre where there is that pin sticking up seems like it’s going to tear it, any tips from anyone who has navigated this issue before?

Thanks in advance, I know I will have more questions to come, and hopefully in the future I’ll be able to answer some too!

Steve

Welcome aboard!

Not quite sure which "pin" your referring too ? Do you mean the one to hold the carpet tile under the drivers side ?

Hi Geoff,

Thank you for the welcome.

To clarify it’s not the thicker carpets that go under the seats and up the sides of the engine. It’s the thinner pile footwell carpet that is a single piece spanning from the drivers footwell across to the passengers footwell (the carpet underneath the basic car mats).

Centrally there is a ‘pin’ that sticks up and had a plastic nut on it, I assume with the intention of holding this carpet in place.

Everything has been freed up but it’s a matter of how I ‘pull through’ the carpet from one side, essentially through a much smaller area to get it out in one piece. Ie. imagine the carpet is sort of butterfly shaped with the larger parts (the wings) on either side being each footwell, and the narrower part is in between, and I need to pull through one of the wings through the centre to get it out in one piece, I seem to have gone on a strange butterfly tangent but hopefully it helps visualise!

Thanks
Steve

Have you removed the centre console - two nuts one under the ashtray and one under the rear box/tray ? Also the two triangles in-front of the console?

Hi Geoff,

I had removed the centre console, but not the triangles, having seen your post I have now done that and with the help of my wife we have started feeding the carpet through….. still difficult but those triangles made all the difference! Bit more work and it will be out.

I’ll soon have all the seats and carpets out with the aim of getting the wet dog smell out of everything, cleaning and dying the carpets, and washing the seats. Cleaning everything else in the van and the. Put it all back together.

Thanks again
Steve

Yes there isn't a lot of room under those fillets and the parts of the chassis they cover! I normally only look under the drivers seat side as there are a couple of earthing points under there that tend sometimes to cause problems!
