2.0l petrol - Engine cut out - No warning

Post by tuttiweb » Tue Feb 04, 2025 10:41 pm

Hi again all.

As I was driving my usual steady style today, the engine cut out with no warning nor unusual sounds, and refused to restart.

AA slowly towed me to my local garage (deals with quite a few Bongos) who've only had time for a very quick look, but advised me that the rotor arm isn't turning and that it's likely the cambelt has broken.

Turning the engine over also makes a different sound to what it usually does. Less 'grunty', for want of a better phrase.

So, given it's a 2.0l petrol, is it likely that a new cambelt (and the other stuff whilst they're in there) should get us up and running again?

Apologies for blatantly seeking reassurance and advice here.

Cheers (with fingers crossed.)

From memory the 2ltr is a 'non-interference' engine, so (fingers crossed) it doesn’t sound too bad.

Not what you need, though.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

When were the various bits last replaced, they all have lifetimes ?
If the cambelt has broken that is one of the longer ones so possibly they haven't been replaced on a regular basis previously ?
Here are the various parts, by engine, with replacement schedules ;

Since my ownership, maintenance has been good. Annual servicing with oil and filter changes.

She's only done 87.000miles(ish), but the belt would I'm sure be overdue. For some reason, I had it in my head that the cambelt was changed just before I bought her (2001), but I now realise that must have been wrong.

I've just replaced the dizzy cap, rotor arm, fuel filter and HT leads during the last service.

My main hope is that there's not secondary damage been caused with the belt breaking and that buying and fitting a cambelt kit will get her back on the road. I don't even know if this is a possibility with this engine.

On that note, any advice on the best cambelt kit to buy? I'm happy to pay a little more for a higher quality one.
What else should sensibly be done whilst 'in there?'

Its non-interference engine, same as the V6, mine broke recently whilst driving no damage, but replaced everything on the front as its much more difficult to reach on a V6 than a 2l engine so it saves the time and money if your not sure when all the bits are replaced!
Provided it is only the cambelt that breaks directly, and its not caused by anything else causing the cambelt to stretch and break then it ought to be fine.

Thank you all for your reads/responses.
I'm likely going to order the kit from Bongospares.

Kit was ordered from BongoSpares.
Staff there were nothing shy of awesome, offering huge benefits of their experience. This saved me a lot of money and a lot of trouble...

My local mechanic fitted the replacement belts and water pump, set the timing, but still no luck. At this point I received the dreaded call.

When enquiring about potentially buying a replacement head, George advised that the symptoms were very much in line that the timing had been set incorrectly.

So, I downloaded and printed the detailed guide from the member's area of Bongo Fury and took it to the fitter. This confirmed he'd set the timing incorrectly.

Using the guide (and my enthusiastic confidence in Bongo Spares' and this forum's experience) they reset the timing and BINGO/BONGO, she fires up beautifully.

So in short, my 2.0l Bongo survived a snapped cambelt and sounds better than ever now.

Thanks to all who read, commented and advised.
