Hi please help I have unfortunately brought a bongo that needed a lot of work and have spent a fortune already

I recently had the alternator changed and a few days later heard a loud rattling noise which seemed under the dashboard, it went away then came back a few days later so was very worried and went back to the garage thst changed the alternator and they found the aircon belt had started to shred I saw loads of the belt shreds on the engine.

They now want to charge 200 pound to fix new belts.

Is it likely that the belt broke due to new alternator or old alternator failing if so should they not replace this free of charge and should they of checked these belts at the time of changing the alternator

Really fed up and feel I am being taken for a ride as know so little

The metal pulleys are quite weak and prone to disintegrating, especially when changing belts or tightening belts after an alternative change for example. It's therefore far better to replace all belts and pulleys when doing work in the area, but any decent garage with experience of Bongos should know this.

Do you have any details of when the belts were last changed, any maintenance history etc. It also helps if you tell us the engine type and age of the vehicle. The belts themselves are not very expensive but the labour/time these days is what really hits the bill.
